2nd WORKSHOP ON: “Energy Poverty in Greece and the contribution of green and social innovation to address the problem”

Energy poverty constitutes a serious social problem in many European countries with multiple effects both on health and on the overall poverty, and affects more than 100.000.000 European citizens. In 2015, about 10% of EU citizens, experienced delays in the payment of public utilities bills (37% in the most affected member states). In 2014, 12% of EU citizens lacked sufficient heating in their homes 2014 (60% in the most affected member states), while 16% of the EU population resided, in accordance with the SILC statistics, in houses with dripping roofs and wet walls (33% in the most affected member states).

On Wednesday 29 June 2016, the 2nd workshop took place within the context of the development of the Policy Paper: “The status of Energy Poverty in Greece and the contribution of green and social innovation to address the problem”. The main objective of the workshop was the exchange of views and ideas with national and EU stakeholders.

This initiative is the result of cooperation between the Heinrich Böll Foundation Greece, the social cooperative “Wind of Renewal” and the Institute for Zero Energy Buildings, which are active in the fields of ecology, energy efficiency and sustainable development, while both the first and the second workshop were supported by Athens Resilience and Sustainability office.

During the first part of the workshop the available national and European programs and innovative financial tools that could help to overcome energy poverty were discussed, in the light of social and green innovation. A significant number of experts and scientists dealing with this issue accepted the invitation – both from Greece and abroad. More specifically in the first part presented:

In the second part of the workshop the draft of the Policy Paper was presented and an open discussion followed with the participation of representatives from universities and municipalities as well as researchers, students and citizens.
Emphasis was given on the contribution of the green and social innovation in dealing with the phenomenon and proposals and comments on the draft were submitted.

The discussion was coordinated by Nikos Chrysogelos, president of social cooperative “Wind of Renewal”, Alice Corovessi and Eleftheria Touloupaki from the Institute of Zero Energy Buildings, Olga Drossou and Kyriaki Metaxa from the Heinrich Böll Foundation Greece.

Invitation to the 2nd Workshop on “The status of Energy Poverty in Greece and the contribution of green and social innovation to address the problem”

The Heinrich Böll Foundation Greece, the social cooperative ANEMOS ANANEOSIS Wind of Renewal and the Institute for Zero Energy Buildings, which are active in the fields of ecology, energy savings and sustainability, joined forces with the aim of publishing a policy report on “The status of Energy poverty in Greece and the contribution of green and social innovation to address the problem”. Within this context we organised the 1st workshop in Athens, in April, which had as its main objective the exchange of views and good practice in dealing with energy poverty. See more here

The 2nd Workshop is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 29 June 2016, in the Alkioni Hall of the Electra Palace Hotel (N. Nikodimou 19-20, Athens) from 14:00 – 20:30.

The first part of the workshop will be organised as a round table and it will focus on financial tools to deal with the energy poverty through social and green innovation.

An open event will follow, where the draft of the Policy report we are working on will be presented and with the proposals include in the draft as a starting point, the discussion will focus around the contribution of green and social innovation in dealing with the phenomenon.

«Social Policy and Social Innovation in Healthcare»

The social cooperative Anemos Ananeosis / Wind of Renewal, the City of Athens, the Union of Municipalities of Attica (P.E.D.A.) and the Greek Green Cities Network are organising a conference on Social Innovation in Healthcare, focused mainly on in-home health care services. The conference will be held on 28 & 29 May 2016 at P.E.D.A. conference room (4, Kotsika str., Athens). The two-day event is under the auspices of the Hellenic Regulatory Body of Nurses and is organising with the support of the European Commission Representation in Greece and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Athens.

The aims of the conference are:

  • to present the Greek and European reality concerning the social innovation in the health sector, with emphasis on implemented pilot projects in-home health care services
  • to highlight the role of municipal clinics, social clinics and social pharmacies in reforming the current health care system,
  • to debate on the accreditation of social enterprises on health services and in-home health care services,
  • to contribute in the promotion of new approaches, good practices and social investments in actions which combine conventional social policy and social innovation in healthcare.

The conference addresses to the Greek doctors and nurses, the staff of municipal social services, the staff and volunteers of municipal clinics, social clinics and social pharmacies, the civil society organizations, mainly the patient organization, the students of relevant disciplines, as well as to the political and administrative staff of the Ministry of Health.
